David Frederick Cunningham, Captain, U.S. Coast Guard (Retired), 74, died suddenly on May 31, 2012. He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Joan, nee Van Winkle; their two sons, Scott (Dena) of Kenai, Alaska, and Glenn of Phoenix, Arizona; their daughter Kristen Kime (Jeff) of Chantilly, Virginia; his brother John of Tinton Falls, New Jersey; their six grandchildren Morgan and Madison Cunningham, Heather Cunningham, and Dylan, Ryan and Landon Kime; and many other family members.
Capt. Cunningham was born on April 21, 1938 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the late John H. and Dorothy S. Cunningham. He grew up in Haddonfield, New Jersey, graduated in 1960 from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, Connecticut, and received his Masters Degree in 1965 from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. In his 27 years on active duty, he served at various duty posts, and was commanding officer of a Coast Guard Loran Station and of three different Coast Guard vessels.
Capt. Cunningham and his wife have lived in Severna Park for over three decades where he has served on numerous Boards and was very active at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church. He also remained very active with his Coast Guard Alumni Association. He was an avid boater, a die-hard Orioles fan, an accomplished handyman, enjoyed travel to different parts of the country, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Visitation hours will be on Friday, June 8th from 5-8pm at Barranco & Sons,P.A Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Hwy, Severna Park, MD 21146. Services will be held on Saturday, June 9th at 11am at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church, 400 Benfield Rd, Severna Park, MD 21146. A private burial will take place at the Crownsville Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville, MD on Monday, June 11th at 11:30am.
