Byron Duane McAlister, 59, of Severna Park, died of heart failure Dec. 1 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after brief illness.

Born March 3, 1946, and reared in Fulton, Ky., Mr. McAlister also resided in Chicago and Bethlehem, Pa. He graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1968 with a degree in business economics, and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Drafted by the Cardinals right out of high school, he played football at college for two years instead.

Mr. McAlister worked for MAPEI Corp. as a production manager.

He was a coach for the Severna Park High School girls' varsity softball team from 1997 to 1999. He led the team to county and regional championships and state runners up. He also coached for the Greater Severna Park Athletic Association's Green Hornets as well as ASA and NSA Girl Select Softball teams from 1987 to 2001, which he led to national championships for seven consecutive years.

Surviving are his wife, Glenda Lee McAlister; two daughters, Lauryn McAlister of Severna Park and Meredith McAlister of Arnold; one son, Darrin A. McAlister of Millersville; one sister, Cathy Hooper of Wichita, Kan.; and his parents, Estelle and Duward McAlister of Fulton.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway, Severna Park, where services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Burial is private.
