Retired Air Force Maj. Wilbur H. "Bill" Biedenkapp, 88, of Arnold, died of natural causes June 25 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Born March 15, 1919, in Queens, N.Y., Major Biedenkapp graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School and earned a bachelor's degree from New York University, where he also worked towards a master's degree.
He served in the Air Force during World War II as a pilot, ferrying troops over the China-Burma-India Hump. He also served as an instrument pilot instructor and as a search and rescue pilot with the 54th Air Rescue Squadron at Goose Bay, Labrador. He retired from Headquarters Command at the former Fort Richie in Maryland after 25 years of service.
He taught high school industrial arts in the New York City school system.
An avid sailor, he also enjoyed bowling.
Surviving are his wife, Millie Biedenkapp; one son, Gary Biedenkapp and wife Jude of Severna Park; two daughters, Heidi Biedenkapp and life partner Jane Phend of Lakeland, Fla., and Patricia Close and her husband Peter of Greenwich, Conn.; five grandchildren, Joe Biedenkapp, Megan Lambiris, Brendan Biedenkapp, Tori and Andy Close and two great-grandchildren, Ella and Dimitris Lambiris. He was the father of the late Bob Biedenkapp.
Services will be held at noon tomorrow at Congregation Kneseth Israel, 1125 Spa Road. Burial will follow in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.
