Bernard Dunne, 73, of Annapolis, died on Friday, July 24, 2009, at the Mandrin House of Hospice of the Chesapeake in South Anne Arundel County after an 11-year battle with colon cancer.

He was born in Burlington, Iowa, on June 2, 1936. Bernie graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1957 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He attended Officers Candidate School in Newport, RI, where he was Company Commander. Bernie was assigned to Pearl Harbor aboard the Destroyer U.S.S. Renshaw, where he was Operations Officer. While in Hawaii he met and married his wife of 48 years, Ann Louise. After his discharge he worked for IBM for 20 years, and acted as Co-Chairman of the United Way Campaign while working as a Marketing Manager in Charlotte, NC. After IBM, he worked for Danfoss Inc. in White Marsh, MD for many years as Vice-President of Sales & Marketing.

The Dunne family lived in Chartwell in Severna Park for many years. Bernie and Ann Louise moved to a condo in Riva Trace in 1999, where he was President of the Condo Association. Bernie enjoyed sailing on his boat Irish Tiger, watching Notre Dame football, golfing at Chartwell Country Club, and walking daily with his close friend Dick Breen.

His greatest pleasure was bragging about his children, his daughter-in-law, and his two grandchildren. Steve, his son, is a graduate of Princeton, Oxford, and Stanford Law School. Steve and his wife, Renee Stone, were both Rhodes Scholars. His daughter, Dr. Jennifer Dunne, graduated from Harvard and received a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. Bernie was also close to his mother-in-law and her husband, Agnes and Raymond Cohen.

Bernie was preceded in death by his parents, John and Marie Dunne, and his brother, Father John Dunne. He is survived by wife Ann Louise Dunne of Annapolis, MD, son Steve Dunne of Chevy Chase, MD, daughter Jennifer Dunne of Santa Fe, NM, and two grandsons. He is also survived by four sisters, Kathleen McLean of Bel Air, MD, Joan Buch and her husband Len of Fairfield, IA, and Anne Snyder and Margaret Dunne of Burlington IA, as well as many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401. A reception in memory of Bernie will be held at Chartwell Country Club, 1 Chartwell Drive, Severna Park, MD from 4 to 7 pm on August 8, 2009. Funeral arrangements are private.
