Barbara Derwin, daughter of the late Mary and Joseph Smergulineo, devoted mother, wife, sister, daughter, aunt, and friend passed away peacefully on January 8th surrounded by her family. Barbara's death follows her heroic two year battle with cancer. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Barbara moved to Maryland in 1969, but never lost her Brooklyn accent.

She cherished her time with friends and family from playing tennis, to exploring neighborhood restaurants, to sharing her love of art, to volunteering at local charitable organizations. Barbara regularly showered everyone in her life with bountiful love. She never forgot a birthday or anniversary. Barbara also had a strong sense of justice and was always ready to fight for what was fair and right. Her quick wit, kind heart, and generous spirit made her loved by all.


Barbara is survived by her adoring husband Frank, her daughter Joanne and husband Jaime Bermudez and her daughter Christine and husband Michael Fleszar. She is also survived by her brother Joseph Smergulineo, her sister-in-law Maureen Moreau and her much loved grandchildren Nicolas and Alena Bermudez and Casey and Edward Fleszar.

Family and friends may visit on Saturday, January 10, 2015 from 7:00pm-9:00pm and Sunday, January 11, 2015 from 2:00pm-4:00pm and 7:00pm-9:00pm at Barranco and Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, January 12, 2015 at 11:00am at Our Lady of the Fields Roman Catholic Church, 1070 Cecil Avenue, Millersville, MD 21108.

Interment will be held on Monday, January 12, 2015 at Our Lady of the Fields Cemetery following Mass.
