Barbara Lois Asplen passed away peacefully October 5, 2016, in her home in Los Lunas, New Mexico. She was 80. Barbara moved to Arnold, MD, in 1971 following the death of her husband, Charles. She worked for nearly three decades at Anne Arundel Community College, where she taught nursing and medical assisting. She had a widespread and profound impact on the quality of care throughout the county, cared deeply about her students and was passionate about education. A native of Baltimore, she was a graduate of the University of Maryland (BS in Nursing) and Johns Hopkins (Masters of Education). Her home was always full of animals – from chickens and snakes to dogs and rabbits, but her favorite pets were her beloved cats. She was well known in Magothy Manor for her cheese balls and shrimp dip which she regularly delivered to neighbors and friends on Christmas Eve. She is survived by her daughter Lauren Asplen and her partner Jack Gold of Washington, D.C., her son Douglas Asplen of Arnold, her grandson Joshua Asplen of Albuquerque, her granddaughter Chelsea Asplen and grandson Charles Allewalt and his wife Molly of Arnold, her granddaughter Kristen Strader, grandson Paul Strader and great granddaughter Riley Strader of Longview, TX. She is also survived by her brother Louis Duvall and his wife Virginia and sister Suzanne Williams and her husband Vic of Los Lunas. She was predeceased in death by her daughters Kathleen Claire Asplen and Melissa Manning Asplen. She was greatly loved and will be missed by all. Family and friends are invited to visit on Thursday, October 13 from 2-4 pm and 6-7 pm at the Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Hwy. A memorial service will be held at 7 pm, following the visitation.
