Austin William Smith, 88, a resident of Severna Park since 1973, died on September 14, 2009 at Baltimore Washington Medical Center, of a sudden heart attack.

He was born in 1920 in Cullman, Alabama and raised in Gadsden, Alabama.

Mr. Smith served in the Army for 20 years and fought in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II. In January 1945, he earned the Bronze Star for heroic achievement in military action. Mr. Smith was stationed in England, Iceland, and Germany during the war. He met Ester Franceschini while stationed in Italy, and they were married in Gorizia, Italy in 1949. He was later stationed in Kentucky and Clearfield, Pa., then served one year as an adviser in Vietnam. He retired in November 1959 at the rank of Major.
The family then settled in Glen Burnie, and Mr. Smith in 1960 joined the Maryland State Roads Commission, now known as the State Highway Administration. He later was director of administration for the Maryland Toll Facilities Administration, retiring in 1983.

Mr. Smith was a parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Severna Park. He was an avid reader, enjoyed historical and political books, and caring for his wife and family. He was a fan of University of Alabama football and formerly coached Little League baseball in Glen Burnie.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Mollie Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Ester I. Smith of Severna Park; a daughter, Janie Ballard of Glen Burnie, MD; three sons, Robert J. Smith of Monkton, MD, Michael E. Smith of St. Mary's City, MD, and David G. Smith of Catonsville, MD; four grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit on Thursday, September 17, 2009 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 p.m. at Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Gov. Ritchie Hwy in Severna Park. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, September 18, 2009 at 1:00 pm at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 689 Ritchie Hwy, Severna Park, MD 21146. Interment will follow in MD Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville, MD.
