With an avid pursuit of challenges, both physically and spiritually, Austin lived his life with vigor and passion. His selflessness, love, and commitment to his family, community, and nation was strong and unwavering. Austin's love for his family and devotion to his wife, Emma, was unconditional.

Austin Keith Smith, 64, of Annapolis, died of cancer Nov. 12 after an illness of 18 months.

Mr. Smith was born Oct. 8, 1942, in Detroit and raised in Phoenix. He lived in Arnold for 20 years before moving to Annapolis. He had also lived in Virginia, Panama, South Carolina, Texas and England.

He graduated from Arizona State University and had a master's degree from Pepperdine University in California. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War.

He worked for the government Defense Commissary Agency and retired as deputy director of the Northeast Region. He then worked as the chief of the school lunch program for the Maryland State Department of Education. He was a representative for the department to the Maryland Emergency Management Agency.

He was a volunteer for the Severna Park Assistance Network and Arundel Habitat for Humanity and was an active member of St. Martin's-In-The-Field Episcopal Church in Severna Park as president of the men's group and participating in the winter shelter program. He was a volunteer for events at the Benfield Elementary School and chaperoned dances at the Woods Community Center.

With a pursuit for challenges and an active lifestyle, he enjoyed water skiing, hiking, rock climbing, cycling and participating in the Polar Bear Plunge.

Survivors include his wife, Emma Elizabeth Cowan Smith of Annapolis; three daughters, Colleen Schiefelbein of Arnold, Rachel Allison Zemaitatis and Sara Elizabeth Smith, both of Philadelphia; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at St. Martin's-In-The-Field Episcopal Church, 375 Benfield Road, Severna Park. Burial is private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lance Armstrong Foundation, P.O. Box 6003, Albert Lea, MN 56007 or the Hope Resource and Day Center, 514 N. Crain Highway, Suite K, Glen Burnie, MD 21061.

Loving grandfather of Paul Laird Schiefelbein and Meredith Elizabeth Schiefelbein, Dear father-in-law of Peter Schiefelbein and Stephen Zemaitatis.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, November 17 th, 4pm at St. Martins in the Field Church, 375 Benfield Rd, Severna Park. Interment Private.
