IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Arthur Newth
Morris, Iii
April 22, 1951 – April 28, 2018
Arthur Newth Morris III
Newth Morris passed away unexpectedly at the age of 67 doing one of his favorite activities: planting flowers at his beloved community beach. Newth´s ties to the community began when his grandfather, Arthur N. Morris Sr., moved his family to Severna Park in the 1940's and built their home on eight acres of land overlooking Sullivan´s Cove in Olde Severna Park. Growing up, Newth looked forward to visiting his grandparents every summer.
Following his father's footsteps, Newth graduated from Randolph Macon Academy in 1969 and from Stetson University in 1973 with a BA in business. He married his first wife, Sue Bateman, a fellow Stetson graduate, and they moved to Severna Park where they raised their three children. Newth was Vice President of Dixie Paper and Packaging Corporation in Glen Burnie, under the guidance of his father and company president, Arthur N. Morris Jr. This made Newth a third generation "box maker." On his father's retirement in 1988, Newth became owner and CEO until he sold it in 2011. A major highlight for him was the White House recognition Dixie received when it was selected for the on-site unveiling of George W. Bush's 2001 Economic Stimulus Plan.
Newth was very proud to join the Board of Directors of Telogis, a GPS tracking company founded by his son A. Newth Morris IV. Through his involvement with Telogis, Newth was able to spend time in CA with his children and grandchildren while helping guide the company to a successful sale to Verizon.
Before retiring in 2016, Newth served three years as Director of the Severna Park Community Center.
A firm believer in higher education, Newth was a member of the Randolph Macon Academy Board (1974-1996). He was also Anne Arundel Community College Foundation President (1992-94).
Always a civic-minded person, Newth has been very active in the community. With his young family, he was a dynamic force within the Jaycees. He served as Severna Park Jaycees President (1977-78) and the Maryland Jaycees President (1981-1982). He was key in the development of the B&A Trail in Anne Arundel County, serving as Chair of the Baltimore and Annapolis Committee (1974-77). He was the Chair of Anne Arundel County Solid Waste Committee (1993-95) and on the Anne Arundel County Ethics Commission (1996-98). He was a member of Young Presidents´ Organization (1993-2001 and then the World Presidents' Organization (2001 - 2013).
His family home had great meaning for him, and the Olde Severna Park Improvement Association has always been close to his heart. At his death he was serving his term as president, and had been President for two previous terms (1999-2000 and 2011-2013). All his energy has been focused with the current board on the construction of the Community Association Clubhouse.
With his gift of public speaking, you could count on Newth to motivate those around him, giving memorable speeches in just about every organization he was involved in.
Newth was a passionate Lionel Train Collector and for the last years he and Alice have done a Christmas Open House displaying his extensive train layout for neighborhood friends and children. Known for his enthusiasm in any interests he pursued, he was an avid Harley Davidson biker. He also enjoyed frequent visits to Daytona Beach, the site of many enjoyable family reunions and building his famous sand castles. He and Alice enjoyed travelling together on their motorcyle and enjoying the view of the Severn River from their porch with a glass of wine. But above all, he was his happiest when surrounded with his family.
Newth is the son of the late Arthur N. Morris Jr and Kathryn Morris "Tassie." He is survived by his wife Alice Morris. Newth is father to three children: A. Newth Morris IV (Claudia), Edward Morris (Jess), Andrea Shea (Brian), and grandfather to seven grandchildren: A. Newth Morris V "Tano", Thiago Morris, Taegyn Morris, Suzanne Shea, Callum Shea, Mackenzie Morris, Callum Morris, and stepfather to three children: Lauren Brueckman, Daniel Brueckman and Haley Brueckman. He is also survived by his brother Michael Morris, his sister Annie Morris and her sons: Luis Uguet de Resayre (Bianka), Sergio Uguet de Resayre, and Eric Uguet de Resayre (Lorena).
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to be made directly to the Olde Severna Park Improvement Association (OSPIA) for their proposed clubhouse.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at Olde Severna Park Community Beach, 199 Maple Ave, Severna Park, MD 21146. A luncheon will follow the service at 212 Springdale Ave, Severna Park, MD 21146Visits: 8
