Ruth Arlene Chandler aka Arlene Tilley Chandler
Arlene Tilley Chandler died on January 1, 2023 after a 13 year battle with Alzheimer's disease. Arlene was born on Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 1939 at home in Bel Air, Maryland. After her birth the doctor, who was a close family friend, and her father Carroll A. Tilley enjoyed a hearty turkey dinner in celebration. Arlene began working in her family's dry cleaning business in grade school, and later also worked in her father's ladies dress shop called Tilley's Fashions, located on Main St. in downtown Bel Air. This experience set the tone for the incredible work ethic that drove her to excel at every job she undertook for the remainder of her life. She graduated from Bel Air High School. She also attended the University of Maryland in College Park, Anne Arundel Community College, and the University of Baltimore where she majored in Art History.
Arlene lived in Texas, Germany and on the island of Crete in Greece with her husband, William L. Corbin, who was an officer in the Air Force, and their daughter, Kimberly. While living abroad, they traveled extensively throughout Western Europe, Turkey and Lebanon. She also was an avid snow and water skier during this phase of her life. Arlene's marriage to Mr. Corbin ended in divorce in 1974. She also traveled on vacation to France, Ireland, Japan, Thailand, China, Taiwan, Barbados and Bermuda.
Upon returning to the United States in 1968, Arlene began her professional career at Aerojet-General Corp. In 1970 she began working for the Monumental Title Company, where she rose from a pool secretarial position to the Assistant to the Chairman of the Board of Directors, and was also the Corporate Secretary and a Member of The Board of Directors. Arlene next worked for Commonwealth Land Title Insurance Company as an executive and was head of the Personnel Department for the Maryland Region. Simultaneously, she was the broker and sole owner of Carroll A. Tilley Inc. a Real Estate Brokerage Firm started by her father, Carroll A. Tilley. She also owned and managed numerous commercial and residential rental properties in Bel Air and Arnold, Maryland. She was a member of the Maryland Builders Association of Maryland Anne Arundel County Chapter, where she served as Membership Chair for 4 terms, the Maryland Mortgage Bankers Association, and the American Business Women's Association, Severna Park Chapter.
Arlene began a new life with her second husband, Charles E. Chandler, who predeceased her in 1998. Together they enjoyed traveling to Texas, Arizona and Florida and they shared a mutual love of art. Arlene embraced Chuck's passions for gardening and golf and even shot a hole-in-one. They also enjoyed their residences in Severna Park, Maryland and Ft. Myers, Florida.
Arlene is survived by her daughter, Kimberly Corbin Aviles of Arnold, and grandson Thomas W. Aviles of Annapolis. She is also survived by stepsons, Clark B. Chandler and his wife Christine of Severna Park, and Steven D. Chandler and wife Kimberly of Raleigh, NC and their children, Cayla Ficklinger and her husband Peter of Severna Park, Drew Chandler and Caroline Chandler of Raleigh, NC.
