Anne McKay Simmons, 88, of Salisbury, formerly of Severna Park, died on February 1, 2012, at University of Maryland Hospital from injuries after a fall.
She was born in Baltimore and raised in Baltimore and Severna Park. She attended Roland Park Country School, Severna Park Elementary and graduated from Annapolis High School before attending Goucher College and Maryland Institute of Art. She married her husband William W. Simmons on February 23, 1951 at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church, residing in the Linstead on the Severn community for over 50 years. Anne and Bill moved to Mallard Landing in Salisbury in 2005.
Anne was a homemaker, teacher, and artist. She taught school at the Woods Memorial Pre-School and Wroxeter School. As a strong believer in civic involvement, she was an active member of the Women's League of Voters working on the Anne Arundel Charter Government proposal, a long term member of the Anne Arundel County Library Board, and was instrumental in the building of the Severna Park Library. She was also a great proponent of the Historic Annapolis Foundation and a Docent for the William Paca House in Annapolis for many years.
In addition to being a lifelong member of Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church, Anne was also a member of Annapolis Yacht Club with her husband Bill, active in the Linstead Community Association, a member of the Gibson Island Club and the Gibson Island Yacht Squadron. She loved sailing, bridge and crossword puzzles, was an avid reader, an accomplished seamstress and knitter, as well as being a very active doubles tennis player who was a strong player on the courts. Anne learned a love of rose gardening from her father, continuing his garden, and a love of cooking from her mom, recreating many of her unwritten recipes. As an Artist, she particularly enjoyed painting with pastels. She had a passion for travel, coordinating over 25 cruises and boating adventures after Bill retired. Through it all, she was a devoted friend and family member staying in close touch with so many as she kept a close watch on the details of our lives. She leaves behind her many new friends at Mallard landing, her longtime friends from her life in Severna Park, and her grandchildren and family, all of whom she loved dearly.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Cecelia Miller and Antrim Almond McKay, her sister Louise McKay Hutchings, and her son William McKay Simmons.
