"Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the day of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever." --Psalm 23:6

After ninety-one years of earthly life, Anna Jane Shumway (née Smith) has gone to live eternally with her savior Jesus Christ. Anna Jane was born on a farm in Coldwater, Michigan on April 12 th , 1925, to John and Flora Smith—the second youngest of eight children. After Flora passed away, Anna Jane and her sister Wilma Jean were cared for by a close aunt. As a young girl, Anna Jane became a Christian and began cultivating a faith which sustained her throughout her life. Each day, Anna Jane wanted to have a "closer walk" with Jesus, wholeheartedly desiring to live out the words to her favorite hymn.

Anna Jane married in February 1948 and subsequently raised five children, Elwin Kurtis (E. K.), Glenn Marion, Jr., Constance Hope, Jennifer Faith, and Angela Charity, and in the course of life relocated to Arnold, Maryland. Her house on Buena Vista Avenue became her refuge and sanctuary, a place filled with a deep love of the Lord, for her family, and for her friends. Throughout her life, Anna Jane enjoyed many diverse interests and hobbies, ranging from collecting Shirley Temple memorabilia, playing the piano, researching Jewish history and family genealogy, landscaping her garden, following conservative American politics, and participating in local church activities at New Hope Chapel of Arnold (formerly New Covenant Church) and Woodland Beech Community Church of Edgewater. Anna Jane passed away peacefully at her home on June 30 th , 2016, with her final moments carefully attended to by Hospice of the Chesapeake.

Throughout her life Anna Jane was known by many names—beloved daughter, sister, mother, and wife, Anne to many friends and neighbors, and Grandma Anna or Grandma Shumway to her grandchildren and great-children. The name she called herself, Anna Jane, was a namesake meaning "grace" and "God is gracious," and Anna Jane embodied the double grace of her name. Anna lived under the grace of God and Jesus's blood, with His name carved in her heart and on her walls. She was loving and patient, faithful and devoted, kind and generous. Of all the gifts Anna Jane gave to her loved ones, whether in word or deed, the greatest was this legacy of love for the Lord which she bestowed-- a treasure of incalculable worth.

Anna Jane was preceded in glory by her longtime friend and companion, Mitchell Skrenczuk, as well as her father John Smith, mother Flora, brothers Emerson and Robert, and sisters Julia, Vesta, and Marjorie. Anna Jane is survived in love by sisters Mary of Quincy, Michigan, and Wilma of Indianapolis, Indiana, all five children, and countless grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including David Bussey, who lived with and cared for his grandmother for many years.
