Anna Mae Baumgarten Riegel, 87, a resident of Annapolis for 17 years, died of cancer June 10 at Atria Manresa Assisted Living in Annapolis after a brief illness.
Mrs. Riegel was born in New York City, reared in Stone Ridge, N.Y., and graduated from New Paltz, N.Y., College. She had a 40-year career in education, teaching in elementary schools throughout New York and eventually becoming an administrator.
She was married in 1945 to Aloysius Emmerling and lived in Kripplebush. N.Y. Her husband died in 1985. In 1990 she moved to the Heritage Harbour community in Annapolis. In 1991 she married Roland Riegel who died in 2001. In 2006 she moved to Atria.
She was a member of Kripplebush United Methodist Church and Trinity United Methodist Church in Annapolis, as well as the New York State Teachers Association. She volunteered at Anne Arundel Medical Center and the Annapolis Public Library. Her hobbies included cooking, gardening and crafts. She thoroughly enjoyed water aerobics, taking classes twice a week at the Heritage Harbour community.
Surviving are one daughter, Sally A. Bunt of Pasadena; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home. A second visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at Moylan Funeral Home in Stone Ridge, with a service at noon. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Stone Ridge. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401, or the American Cancer Society, 1041 Route 3 North, Building A, Gambrills, MD 21954.
