IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Andrew John
Wagner
January 31, 1934 – February 25, 2023
Andrew John Wagner died peacefully on 2/25/23 surrounded by the love of his children. Andy as he was known by all was born on January 31,1934 in Baltimore Md and raised in East Baltimore. Andy attended Loyola High School where he played football, baseball and basketball. He received multiple awards for his athletics and was awarded a football scholarship to attend the University of Delaware. He played football all four years and graduated in 1956. While at University he was in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) and was an officer of the Army from 1956-1958. He was married and devoted to Ann Ebert Wagner his childhood sweetheart, they were married for 63 years and raised six children.
Andy took an active role in his children's lives. He loved to sing in the car often making up songs to make the travel more entertaining and would tell fabulous bedtime stories. He loved crabbing in the Severn River and steaming crabs to eat on the back porch. He always welcomed nieces, nephews, extended family and friends into his home. It was not unusual to have an extra person or two at the dinner table. He had a big laugh and a great sense of humor. He was known to travel around the state to attend his children's and grandchildren's games, recitals, plays and significant life events. He and his wife took each grandchild on a special adventure for their tenth birthday and every summer each family of grandchildren were at their house for a week of "Camp Granna". While his wife was the architect of the recreational activities Andy was the "technical support" for all adventures. There were family vacations down the ocean where grandkids enjoyed trips to the boardwalk, doughnuts for breakfast and ice cream after dinner. He loved to dance, and a dance named "The Dad" is a favorite at all family weddings. Andy enjoyed playing a game of poker with his grandchildren a round of golf with his sons or a quiet talk with his daughters. He was a confidant, advisor and a touchstone for his family.
Andy was an active member at St. Andrew's by the Bay Catholic church in Annapolis. He loved to sing and was not shy to share his voice during Mass. He was involved in the Justice and Peace committee and the sister parishes in El Salvador and Baltimore. Prior to attending St. Andrews, he and his family were members of the Pilgrim Community. Andy was an example of someone who lived his faith. After his retirement from Exxon, he volunteered for many years at St. Ambrose Housing providing financial counseling.
He is survived by his children Matthew and Bernadette Wagner, Jane Wagner Manlove, Mark Wagner and Amy Haury, Julie Wagner and Dan Deitemyer, Henry and Sally Wagner, Martha and Jay Murphy, 17 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Ann Ebert Wagner, his parents George and Ella Wagner, his sister Margaret Franz and his brother George Wagner.
He was beloved by all who knew and loved him and will be missed for his strong commitment to his family and his faith, his sense of humor and his huge capacity to love.
