Alison Marie Hylan, 18, of Arnold, died unexpectedly of epilepsy Jan. 9 at Drexel University in Philadelphia, where she was a freshman enrolled in a writing program.
The daughter of Jan E. and Leo P. Hylan of Arnold, Miss Hylan was born April 24, 1986, in Annapolis, and was reared in Pasadena and Arnold. She graduated from Broadneck High School in 2004, where she was president of the Best Buddies club, an organization dedicated to helping developmentally disabled fellow students; district officer of the Capital Key Club; and editor of the Key Club newsletter.
She volunteered as a counselor at Camp Great Rock, a week-long, overnight camp for children and teens with epilepsy sponsored by the Children's National Medical Center Department of Neurology in Washington, D.C.
Among her interests were writing poetry and short stories.
Surviving, in addition to her parents, is her brother, Leo P. Hylan III, currently a college student living in Chicago.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway in Severna Park. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Andrew by the Bay Catholic Church, 701 College Parkway near Cape St. Claire. Burial will follow in Lakemont Memorial Gardens in Davidsonville.
