Dwight Elliott Hurlbert passed away at his home in Severna Park, MD on January 12, 2013 at the age of 97 years. His death was by natural causes and he was surrounded by members of his loving family. He is now in the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and he will be missed dearly by all who knew him.
Mr. Hurlbert was born at Ong, Nebraska on December 26, 1915, the son of Silas Wellington and Mabel Cornelia Rowe Hurlbert. His childhood was spent on the farm that his grandmother homesteaded in the early 1870s. He attended the local schools from which he graduated in 1933. He enlisted in the United States Army on July 16, 1938 and served continuously until his retirement from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel on March 1, 1967. His military service included overseas assignment in the Philippine Islands, the countries of Ecuador and Colombia in South America, Japan and Saudi Arabia. He was united in marriage to the former Mignonette Anderson of Strang, Nebraska on September 16, 1941, his death culminating more than 71 years of loving companionship.
To this union were born two sons, Rodney Lynn of Prescott, Arizona; Jack Allen of Bluff City, Tennessee; and one daughter, Rebecca Sue of Severna Park, Maryland. Along with his wife, his two sons and one daughter, he is survived by five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
He was an avid golfer, a devoted University of Nebraska football fan and, in his retirement years, he undertook an exhaustive documentation of his family genealogy. He loved traveling and being in the outdoors but his greatest enjoyment was spending time with his wife. Upon his assignment to Fort George G. Meade in 1960, Mr. Hurlbert and his family moved to Severna Park where he resided until his death. He and his wife have been long-time members of the Severna Park United Methodist Church.
Friends may gather on Saturday January 19, 2013 from 1-3:00pm at the Barranco & Sons, P.A Severna Park Funeral Home 495 Ritchie Highway Severna Park, MD 21146.
In lieu of flowers, a contribution in honor of his wife Mignonette may be made to the Alzheimer Association P.O. Box 96011 Washington, DC 20090-6011
